About Gout

General information about Gout.

Gout is a type of arthitis caused by a build-up of needle-like uric acid crystals in the area of one or more joints. The source of the uric acid crystals is unnaturally high levels of uric acid in the body (hyperuricemia). Gout symptoms include sudden attacks of extreme pain, with redness, heat and swelling in the affected joints.

The most common center for gout attacks, particularly the first time, is in one of the big toes, but gout can also attack the ankles, knees, hands and wrists. Most gout attacks subside within a couple of days, but during the attack the patient may find it impossible to use the affected limb.

Men over 40 years old are the most likely to suffer from gout, though it is becoming more common amongst post-meopausal women in recent years. Over-weight people and heavy drinkers are particularly prone to gout attacks. In the United States, approximately 4 million people suffer from gout and the numbers are increasing rapidly.
